How to test your keyboard
- Open this page on a device with a physical keyboard; a phone or tablet cannot send every key.
- Press each key once. The matching key on the board lights up and the tested counter increases.
- Enable the function-row, navigation or numpad sections if your keyboard has them, then press those keys too. Use reset to start again.
When every visible key has been pressed, the page confirms that all keys are working. To measure your speed instead, take a typing test.
What keys can be tested
The keyboard tester covers letters, numbers, punctuation, the Shift, Ctrl, Alt and Meta modifiers, function keys F1 to F12, the arrow keys, and the navigation cluster: Insert, Home, Page Up, Delete, End and Page Down. The numpad appears when you enable that section.
Some keys cannot be captured reliably in a browser. Media keys, the power button and some system shortcuts are handled by the operating system before the page sees them. The test also needs a screen at least 768px wide, so a desktop or laptop is required.
Common keyboard problems
A key is stuck
A key that stays highlighted may be physically stuck or held down by the system. Unplug and reconnect the keyboard, press the key again, and check whether the tester still shows it as pressed.
Ghosting
Some keyboards cannot register several keys at once. If combinations such as Ctrl + A + Shift fail, the keyboard is probably ghosting. A model with anti-ghosting or n-key rollover fixes it.
Double typing
If one press produces repeated characters, try another cable or USB port, update the keyboard firmware, and check the operating system’s key-repeat settings. Worn switches can also cause it.
A key does not respond
Clean around the key, try a different USB port, and test on another computer. If it still fails there, the switch or membrane is damaged and the keyboard needs repair or replacement.
Frequently asked questions
Is this keyboard test free?
Yes. The keyboard tester is free, needs no account, and runs in your browser.
Does the keyboard test work on a laptop?
Yes, including a built-in laptop keyboard. Compact laptops may not have a numpad or a full function row, so enable only the sections your keyboard actually has.
Why does a key not light up?
The browser may never receive that key. Function, media and system keys are often intercepted by the operating system, and keys are not captured while another app has focus.
Can I test several keys at once?
Yes. The board highlights every key that is currently pressed, which helps you spot ghosting or a rollover limit.
Does it work on a phone or tablet?
No. Phones and tablets do not send physical key codes, so use a desktop or laptop with a physical keyboard. The page shows a message on screens narrower than 768px.
Is my keyboard data sent anywhere?
No. Key presses are handled in your browser; the tester does not record or upload what you type.
How do I reset the test?
Press reset above the keyboard. It clears the tested count and the last-key display so you can start again.
