Typing test
How the typing test works
Start typing the words on screen and the typing test begins immediately. The timer counts down from the duration you chose, and every correct, incorrect and skipped character is tracked. When the time runs out, or you finish the final word, you see your speed in words per minute and your accuracy.
The whole test runs in your browser. You can pick 15, 30, 60 or 120 seconds, restart with the Tab key, and test your keyboard separately if a key feels unresponsive.
What is a good typing speed?
For everyday computer work, 40 to 50 WPM is a comfortable average; 60 to 80 WPM is proficient, and above 100 WPM is advanced. Most beginners start somewhere between 20 and 30 WPM.
| Level | Approximate speed |
|---|---|
| Beginner | 20–35 WPM |
| Average | 40–50 WPM |
| Proficient | 60–80 WPM |
| Advanced | 100+ WPM |
These ranges are approximate. Speed varies with the language, the keyboard, and whether a test counts corrected mistakes.
How WPM and accuracy are calculated
WPM = correct characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes
Accuracy is the number of correct characters divided by all typed characters, multiplied by 100. Backspacing clears a wrong character from the count, but it costs time, so slow down when mistakes repeat.
Worked example: if you type 250 correct characters in one minute, then 250 ÷ 5 = 50 words, so your speed is 50 WPM. If you also typed 10 wrong characters, accuracy is 250 ÷ 260 ≈ 96%.
Tips to type faster
- Rest your fingers on the home row and use one finger per key.
- Look at the screen instead of the keyboard; accuracy comes first.
- Slow down to fix a mistake you keep repeating, then build the speed back up.
- Take short breaks and relax your hands, shoulders and jaw; tension costs speed.
- Practise for 10 to 15 minutes a day on the same layout instead of one long weekly session.
Frequently asked questions
How is WPM calculated?
WPM is the number of correct characters divided by five, then divided by the minutes elapsed. Dividing by five turns characters into standard five-character words.
Is this typing test free?
Yes. The typing test is free, needs no account, and runs entirely in your browser.
What is a good WPM for a job?
Many office jobs expect roughly 40 to 60 WPM, while data-entry roles often ask for 60 WPM or more. Check the specific job listing, because requirements vary.
Does the typing test store my data?
No. Your keystrokes and results stay in your browser, and the typed text is not sent to a server. Optional analytics load only after you accept cookies.
How long should I practise?
Short daily sessions of 10 to 15 minutes work better than one long session each week. Use 15 or 30 seconds for drills and 60 or 120 seconds to measure progress.
Should I use 15, 30, 60 or 120 seconds?
Use 15 or 30 seconds for a quick drill, 60 seconds for a standard benchmark, and 120 seconds to check endurance and consistency.
Can I use a different keyboard layout?
Yes. The test scores the characters your keyboard sends, so QWERTY, Dvorak and other layouts work. The on-screen keyboard shows a standard US layout only as a guide.
